Trends in psychotropic drug prescribing in Norwegian nursing homes from 1997 to 2009: a comparison of six cohorts

2012

Background Psychotropic drugs are extensively prescribed for the treatment of neuropsychiatric symptoms, despite modest efficacy and severe side effects. Aims We examined trends in psychotropic drug prescribing in Norwegian nursing homes from 1997 to 2009, in order to gain insight in practice development. Methods The study is a secondary data analysis of six cross-sectional nursing home studies conducted between 1997 and 2009. Patients aged >65 years were included. We compared the prevalence of psychotropic drugs (antipsychotics, anxiolytics, hypnotics, and antidepressants). Associations between prescription of psychotropics, and patients' age, gender, type of ward, and year of data collect…

Social Media's Impact on Healthcare Services

2015

Abstract Taking into account the changes in recent years (the increased access to internet, the existence of affordable mobile devices and the ease of communication due to the growth of social media) it seems natural to investigate social media's impact on healthcare services. Furthermore, studies conducted worldwide show their benefits, both in terms of the patient, as well as the healthcare providers’. However, Romania's healthcare system faces serious problems on basic aspects. Thus, using secondary data, this paper aims to present the existing concerns about the impact of social media on healthcare services and to discuss to what extent they are applicable also in Romania.

Validation of Semantic Analyses of Unstructured Medical Data for Research Purposes

2019

BACKGROUND: In secondary data there are often unstructured free texts. The aim of this study was to validate a text mining system to extract unstructured medical data for research purposes. METHODS: From a radiological department, 1,000 out of 7,102 CT findings were randomly selected. These were manually divided into defined groups by 2 physicians. For automated tagging and reporting, the text analysis software Averbis Extraction Platform (AEP) was used. Special features of the system are a morphological analysis for the decomposition of compound words as well as the recognition of noun phrases, abbreviations and negated statements. Based on the extracted standardized keywords, findings rep…

A strategic needs perspective on operations outsourcing and other inter-firm relationships

2013

Abstract This paper considers two issues: the formation of inter-firm relationships, and the choice of governance form. These have been widely investigated in both the strategic management and operations management fields. This paper contributes to the literature in three ways. First, we address why firms enter inter-firm relationships by hypothesizing that managers enter them to pursue three strategic needs, that is: efficiency/effectiveness, knowledge/learning, and global market access. Our first contribution evidences the relationship between the above strategic needs and a number of operational objectives that managers normally pursue in an inter-firm relationship. Second, we hypothesiz…

DIGITAL MARKETING PERFORMANCE EVALUATION METHODS

2018

The share of digital marketing from total marketing spending is increasing fast year by year. Still the majority of companies admit that they are missing clear methods on how to evaluate (positive/negative) effects obtained using digital marketing. As this field of digital marketing is relatively new, there are no firm and widely recognized measurement methods resulting in marketing specialists being confused by an overwhelming amount and variety of different digital marketing metrics and large amounts of data. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to list the existing methods which could help marketers to evaluate their digital marketing campaign effectiveness and to discuss these methods’ e…

Governance forms drivers in bio-pharmaceutial inter-firm relationships

2012

Networking benefits are acknowledged by many studies in the industrial organization and strategic management fields; transaction cost theory agency and property right theory provide the economic foundations to the market-hierarchy dilemma; while Resource based-view (RBV), relational and evolutionary theories provide the strategic foundation of the inter-firm relationships. All this theoretical strands investigate reasons that push firms to formalize their relationship in different governance structures. The bio-pharmaceutical industry has the characteristics to offer to the potential partners both exploitation or exploration alliances benefits. In particular some elements play a “pivot” rol…

THE EFFECT OF INBOUND, OUTBOUND AND COUPLED INNOVATION ON PERFORMANCE

2012

The focus of this paper is on exploring linkages among Open Innovation practices and firm performance. While, in the last ten years, a certain amount of papers facing such issue has been published, most of them treat inbound, outbound, and coupled innovation practice processes separately respect to different dimensions of innovation and financial performance. We argue that the concurrent influence of specific Open Innovation practices on both innovation and economic-financial firms' performance has not been investigated so far into the literature and it is of primary managerial importance. We empirically test our framework on a sample of 105 companies listed on the Industrial Machinery and…

Purpose Myopia is increasing worldwide and possibly linked to education. In this study, we analyse the association of myopia and education in the U.S. and investigate its age-dependency. Methods We conducted a secondary data analysis using the public use files from the cross-sectional study National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of the period from 1999 to 2008. 19,756 participants aged 20 to 85 years were included with data on education and ophthalmic parameters (distance visual acuity, objective refraction and keratometry). Spherical equivalent, astigmatism, corneal power and corneal astigmatism were evaluated for an association with education using linear regression analysis wit…
